The Mars Volta Cube Experience

The Mars Volta teases fans with their new single in this experiential encounter.

This summer, we worked with Clouds Hill and Digital Ambiance to design and fabricate an experiential introduction to The Mars Volta’s newest single. The experience, dubbed The Volta Cube, invited fans into a private infinity mirror light show programmed to the sound of their first single in nearly 10 years. We built the entire 8’x8’x8′ cube in our Oakland shop and shipped it assembled to Grand Park in Los Angeles for the intimate fan experience. The frame was built with steel and wood which provided a solid yet lightweight infrastructure. The exterior was skinned with a specialty mirror aluminum composite sheet lined with a gloss black vinyl, and the interior skinned with a two way mirrored plexiglass. LED strip lighting, programmed by the lighting pros at Digital Ambiance, created the lighting effects. Days before the start of the event, The Mars Volta revealed a start time and coordination points of the location via cryptic messaging on their social media channels, using the hashtag #voltacube and within hours of the start, there was a line of fans through the park waiting for the experiential encounter. Check out some press from the event. And see a video of the build and install below.
