California Academy of Sciences new environmental nature center brings new life to an old exhibit.
The Nature Lab located on the third floor of the Academy, provides a dynamic space for visitors and classroom field trips to dive deep into some of the Academy’s incredible natural resources. Previously known as The Nature Center, the newly renovated environmental nature center now features interactive stations, a flexible library/classroom, an extensive artifact library, and a reservable science lab for hands-on exploration.
We facilitated the renovation by constructing five new interactive stations where visitors can learn about mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and birds in engaging, multi-sensory ways. As some of the first braille elements implemented in the facility, these stations – with auditory, tactile, and sensory components – enhance accessibility and inclusivity for all visitors. We also transformed the library space with new vitrines and and color-blocked zones that highlight the Academy’s remarkable taxidermy collection. Updated wall graphics and exterior signage now create a cohesive visual identity, inviting curiosity before visitors even enter the room.
The Nature Lab fosters discovery, creativity, and connection with the natural world, an environmental nature center like no other within the Academy. Each element of the space was designed with collaboration in mind, allowing educators, researchers, and students to engage directly with real scientific specimens. The open layout encourages group exploration and spontaneous learning moments, while new digital components help bridge traditional exhibits with modern technology. Through its thoughtful design and renewed focus on inclusivity, the Nature Lab inspires the next generation of scientists, conservationists, and lifelong learners. Check it out on your next visit!
