San Francisco's de Young Museum explores the Art of Manga in their latest exhibition.
In a continuing relationship with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, we helped bring this compelling art exhibition installation to fruition through construction and installation of layered portals leading from room to room. The exhibition spans seven large exhibition spaces and portrays the history and themes of this popular comic-style art form originating in Japan.
The process began by meeting the exhibition design team at the de Young to discuss their inspiration for the portals. With a timeline and budget parameters set, we designed an approach with a minimal footprint, factoring in safety and feasibility. The art exhibition installation features painted aluminum 4×4 beams rigged to the ceiling between which a unistrut grid is mounted to support the layers of artwork below. Custom brackets cut from polycarbonate connected adhesive backed vinyl applied PVC panels together to hang and evenly space each panel. Our graphics team worked meticulously on lining up the printed patterns spanning the giant sheets. The portals fit the aesthetic of each room and offer different experiences from each side. This dynamic art exhibition installation exemplifies our team’s ability to merge structural precision with creative storytelling, transforming complex concepts into immersive environments that captivate visitors. Each component was crafted to balance form, function, and artistic intent, showcasing our expertise in delivering museum-quality installations that elevate the exhibition experience. The result feels like a visitor journey through dimensional pages of a giant comic book. The exhibition runs through January 25, 2026 so go check it out while you can.
