For the release of Monsters University, Pixar held their wrap party at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, and as with wrap parties past they wanted a stunning visual element to set the tone for the event. So event producers e2k called on John Murray Productions, Inc. to design, create and install a replica rotunda inspired by the Monsters University Campus featured in the film. The process began with multiple meetings with Pixar creatives, who provided rough sketches from the film to serve as inspiration. The 30' wide by 34' tall rotunda was then created using a truss frame covered with painted canvas, faux stalagmites and other creepy elements. Each pillar was capped with foam architectural elements reminiscent of ancient Greece, but accented with monstrous elements like eyeballs and teeth. The challenge came in building the massive rotunda in pieces in our Oakland shop, and then shipping them safely across the bay for the install. The effect was grand and inspiring, perfect for a celebrating the animation giant's latest film.
